The Children's Home Society of Florida is a statewide organization helping to end child abuse. The organization was founded in November of 1902 by Reverend D.W. Comstock in Jacksonville, Florida. In the beginning, the organization started with a handful of staff, a few dozen kids, and an operating budget of fewer than one thousand dollars. Since those humble beginnings, the Children's Home Society has grown to include over one hundred thousand kids and over 1,800 staff located in dozens of offices throughout the state of Florida.
Under the guidance of Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Shaver, the organization has implemented programs to help guide the youth in the program for bright futures. One such program that they offer is called Project 18 Mentoring. This program offers youth ages twelve to eighteen the chance to be paired with adult mentors within the surrounding community.
The goal is to provide a positive role model that will take an active position in the child's life. This structure allows children an opportunity to befriend someone outside of the organization and to develop a positive outlet for which they can share anything occurring in their daily lives.
Through their work in the state of Florida, the Children's Home Society has received numerous accolades both locally and nationally for the positive accomplishments they have achieved. Some of which include the Adoption Excellence Award and Congressional Angel by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. The next step for the organization is going to be partnering with community humanitarians, such as Paul Vernon of Cryptsy, who have connections with local business leaders to offer their time in fundraising efforts.
